Gerbera & Roses growing article October 2005

Watering; how and when;

Start with irrigation about one or two days before planting the gerberas or roses, this make the cocopeat potting mix wet and will flush out possible excess salts or nutrients.

Start around one hour after sunrise with the irrigation, when the plants are full grown you could stop around 3-4 hours (gerberas) or 1-3 hours (roses) before sunset. The stopping time also depend which growing media you use and in which growing stage the plants are.

The drain percentage must be between the 30-40% of the total water gift, but check regularly the moisture of the cocopeat potting mix and the root development of the plants.

In the first 1-2 months after planting you should be careful that the coco peat potting mix does not get to wet, in this period you stop 4-6 hours before sunset.

Computer watering settings;

There could be a difference between a cloudy and sunny day of more than 40-50% in the usage of water with the gerbera or rose plants, so make sure that you check everyday your drain water percentage and make adjustments when necessary.

Over the last few years I have worked out a watering regime for gerbera & roses in Australia, which is as follows;

Start in the morning with 2 or 3 time start waterings from 1 hour after sunrise, after the third time start you start watering with light starts until 1-4 hours before sunset.

An interval between time starts of 1 – 1.5 hours, light starts every 175 – 225 joules with a minimum time between the waterings of 1 hour and the maximum time 4 hours (this is to prevent to much water on a dark day). The volume of water per irrigation between 80 – 100 ML per dripper.

Each greenhouse set-up is different and it takes some time and adjustments to the above watering regime to find the right computer settings for your nursery.

Yellow sticky trap rolls;

At the moment we use with great success yellow sticky trap rolls to catch flying insects in our propagation house, compared to the last few years we have fewer insects and we have reduced spraying for sciarid flies by more than 50 %. The main reason for this success is that every insect on the sticky trap can't multiply it self anymore so you keep the numbers lower.

The sticky trap rolls could also be used in the greenhouse when you have many flying insects like; sciarid fly, white Fly, trip and Leaf miner fly.
